Five years ago I made a short documentary about my great uncle, Ome Han, who has lived on the same farm all his life. Since then, a lot has changed in both our lives. A few months before I became a mother myself, now almost a year ago, it was discovered that Uncle Han is sick. The making of this film now gives me the opportunity to spend time with him again and meanwhile reflect on both his life and the future I wish for myself and my young family.

After years of absence, a man returns to the house where he grew up in the Groningen countryside. The house is empty and dilapidated by earthquakes due to gas extraction. As he starts to restore the house, memories pass by. The minimally lit interiors are in stark contrast to the vast and open landscape.

Those 6 days of isolation trigger memories and doubts about the future. While trying to give her decision a place, she reflects on what it is like to be a woman in the cultures she is a part of.

La Voie de la Rose' translated to 'The way/voice of the rose' is a documentary about love and politics in which the rose is considered 'the woman' in addition to its multifaceted symbolism. We see the rose as a carrier of meaning at protests, in a café, in a garden, dried on a bulletin board, in a drag show.
